pimp my child
Like the girlfriend or the car, the well-fitted child
can be the perfect social accessory. Luckily, baby sizes of D&G
also come at baby prices.

Every clothes-conscious person worth his salt knows the trauma of being
out-dressed. The school yard can be a harsh learning ground, so give
your child the tools that they need to succeed. Head
to Kutuzovsky Prospekt, where ultra trendy boutique Daniel offers
miniature Versace tuxedos (from 260 u.e.) and matching frocks (180
u.e.) that are absolutely to-die-for. Everyday wear includes Dolce and
Gabanna jean jackets (100 u.e.), puffy winter coats by Diesel (60
u.e.), and flashy Moschino sneakers (126 u.e.). I was particularly fond
of the snappy Ferre gym outfit (110 u.e.), and matching horsehair white
boots (150 u.e.), as well as a Armani sundress (50 u.e.). The shop also
features a wide selection of hats, belts, scarves, purses and other
accoutrements, because you’re never too young to over-accessorize. The
most stylish threads for youngsters can be found at designer Sonya
Rykiel’s boutique, which firmly believes that your youngster shouldn’t
have to miss out on this season’s nautical theme. They’ve mixed things
up with a “pirates and flowers” aesthetic for kids, t-shirts starting
at 2,000 rubles for boys, 3,000 for girls. Dresses embroidered with
flowers and rhinestones go for 4,140 rubles each, and capri pants start
at 1,500 rubles. Summer clothes include flowered shorts (1,300 rubles),
with matching purses (2,760 rubles) and headbands (1,300 rubles). They
carry styles to fit three-month-olds up through the angst-ridden teen
years. Keep in mind that while spit-up must be dry-cleaned, at least no
red wine will be spilled on any of these fine garments, unless you’ve
got an alcoholic-in-training in the playroom. Elite Crocus City Mall’s
J. Lo boutique carries apparel for preteens that dances the fine line
between cute and slutty. Glitter tanktops (1,500 rubles) never go out
of style, and a steady diet of salad and Cola Light will ensure that
the clothes still fit ten years from now. If there is more love
in your heart than there is money in your wallet, try one of the many
consignment shops in the city which carry children’s wear. Pyatnitskaya
Ulitsa’s Vtoroye Dyhaniye has a constantly changing second-hand
selection that often includes upscale designs for little ones, such as
skirts and trousers from Ungaro for 500 rubles and up. As any
bargain-hunter knows, “vintage” sounds sexier if you pronounce it with
a French accent. If none of these stores suit your child’s
impeccable taste, there’s always the Internet for a wider selection.
The ever-popular eBay has everything for every developmental age, right
up to the point where you’re back in diapers again. Make sure that the
seller agrees to ship with a delivery confirmation to Russia, because
the website won’t be take responsibility if a disgruntled postal
employee hijacks the goods while they’re en route to you. If your
child is old enough to form his or her own thoughts and words, you may
want to let them sit in on the selection process. Brought something
home that was clearly the wrong choice? Distract with a lullabye: “Hush
little baby, don’t say a word, mama’s gonna buy you a silver rattle
from Tiffany’s! (100 euro starting bid, eBay).” A little luxury will
make those terrible twos slightly less terrible. |
